What is Hemp Oil?

Hemp oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant. While all plants in the cannabis genus are capable of producing such an oil, hemp oil is most commonly made with industrial hemp, a varietal that has been cultivated for the specific purpose of industrial production (stalk, seed and fiber). It has only trace amounts of the psychoactive substances commonly associated with cannabis plants (such as THC). Therefore, hemp oil is near-free of THC, and does not have psychoactive properties.

Hemp oil is typically made through a cold pressing process, which creates an oil that is rich and nutty in flavor with a slight green hue before it has been refined. However, after the refining process is complete, the oil is colorless with a mild or minimal flavor.

Many people who are unfamiliar with hemp oil believe it to be rather controversial, as hemp is known mostly for being a cannabis plant. However, hemp oil itself is harmless, and has many health benefits when used in edible or topical forms.

4 Uses for Hemp Oil

Hemp oil serves as an excellent replacement for products that use petroleum as a base, as it is far more beneficial. Here are a few examples of common uses of hemp oil:

  1. Moisturizing oil: Hemp oil is commonly added into skin lotions to take advantage of its natural moisturizing properties. It helps to nourish the skin and improve blood flow.
  2. Cooking: Hemp oil is often used in cooking, typically as a salad oil or as a substitute for olive oil. However, it is not generally used in frying or other high-heat cooking environments.
  3. Biodiesel: Like many other vegetable oils, hemp oil can be used as a biodiesel. It is an effective substitute for petroleum in many applications. In these applications, it is safer for use, as it is non-toxic and will not release any harmful chemicals when decomposing.
  4. Nutritional supplements: Hemp oil can be used in all different types of nutritional supplements to make it easy for people to benefit from it every single day. These supplements can come in the form of capsules or tinctures, as well as pure liquid oil.
